Ligament Sprains and Tears

A sprain is a stretching or tearing of ligaments — the tough bands of fibrous tissue that connect two bones together in your joints. The most common location for a sprain is in your ankle. Initial treatment includes rest, ice, compression and elevation.

Ligament injuries in the hand and wrist occur due to overstretching or tearing, often during falls or sports-related trauma. Symptoms include pain, swelling, bruising, and joint instability.

Mild sprains can be treated with rest, ice, compression, elevation (RICE), and splinting. Complete ligament tears or those causing persistent instability may require surgical repair or reconstruction.

Surgical treatment restores joint stability and prevents long-term dysfunction. Most patients return to full activity after a structured rehabilitation period.
